A new study conducted by researchers at Dartmouth College have discovered that food products made with organic brown rice syrup contain high levels of arsenic.

Arsenic is a carcinogen that can cause heart disease and cancer if one is exposed to high levels of it. Researchers found arsenic in some organic baby formulas. Infants are more vulnerable to arsenic’s negative side effects due to their small size. Children exposed to too much arsenic can develop poorer intellectual functions and lower IQs.

Other food products found to contain arsenic included cereal bars and energy shot drinks. The researchers believe that occasionally eating food with organic brown syrup won’t cause any harm, but the frequency should be monitored.

Nine people were injured Wednesday night in Cincinnati after 11 vehicles and a tractor-trailer collided on Interstate 75.

The extent of the injuries was not released, though no one was seriously hurt. One of the cars included a police cruiser that had pulled over another car. Investigators believe that the driver of the car could be at fault for the pileup since he pulled over on the left instead of on the right shoulder.

Interstate 75 near Galbraith Road and Shepherd Lane was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up about 300 gallons of diesel fuel spilled by the tractor-trailer.

A mix up with birth control pills and placebos could put women at a high risk for pregnancy and has prompted the drug manufacturer Pfizer to issue a recall.

Nearly a million birth control pills of Lo/Ovral-38 and the generics norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol are affected by the packaging error. The mix up could cause the contraceptive to become significantly weakened. Women who believe their birth control package is defective are encouraged to start using non-hormonal birth control immediately.

A 32 year-old woman has already filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after she become pregnant while taking birth control. The mix up is not believed to pose any health risks to the child should the woman become pregnant.

Nearly 250,000 Ci Sport three-piece insulated and expandable lunch box sets are being voluntarily recalled by California Innovations, Inc. for a potential leak in the freezer gel packs.

The three piece set comes with an aluminum bottle and freezer gel pack, which contains diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The chemicals are poisonous to humans. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, California Innovations, Inc. received two reports of dogs ingesting the gel and becoming seriously ill. One dog died and one recovered.

The lunch boxes were sold in Costco, Leon Korol, and Cost U Less stores. Consumers who have purchased the recalled product can return it to Costco for a refund.

Nearly a week after the Costa Concordia cruise liner crashed near the Tuscan coast, the search continues for at least 24 missing passengers and crew members.

The search had to be postponed on Wednesday due to poor weather conditions. Now the threat of worse weather coming and the possibility of the ship shifting and sinker deeper into the ocean has put added pressure on rescue crews.

After the rescue missions are completed, the government is expected to extract nearly 2,300 tonnes of diesel fuel and lubricant oil to prevent it from leaking into the ocean. The extraction could take nearly two weeks to complete.

A southern California man who sued Starbucks Coffee Co. for injuries he sustained in a slip and fall accident has been awarded $7.5 million by a San Diego Superior Court jury last week.

In 2008, the man was in the coffee shop when he fell on the wet floor. Ongoing complications from his head injury has prevented him from returning to work since the fall. Starbucks Coffee Co. was found negligent in the maintenance of its property.

The verdict will compensate the man for his lost income, medical expenses, and loss of enjoyment of life while his wife will also receive money for loss of consortium.

Both drivers attempted to avoid a crash when one pickup truck crossed the center yellow lines, but ended up swerving into each other. The 49 year-old driver was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition; officers say he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver in the other truck, 48, and his four year-old daughter are also in stable condition. His 27 year-old passenger, however, is in serious condition at University Hospital. Police say the young child was not in a proper car seat and was only wearing a lap seatbelt.

Last week the National Transportation Safety Board announced its proposal for a nationwide cellphone and portable electronics ban for all drivers. Most states have laws against new drivers using cellphones, but this suggested ban would be the most widespread restriction to date.

In a survey of 6000 Americans, half of all drivers 21 to 24 years-old admitted to having sent text messages or emails while driving and a fifth of all drivers have admitted to cellphone use behind the wheel. The proposed ban would include talking and emailing, as well as texting.

The NTSB does not have the power to enforce this ban, but lawmakers and federal regulators significantly consider the board’s recommendations.

A 41 year-old woman was killed in an elevator accident in which it crushed her between the car and the wall shaft. Officials believe the doors closed as she was walking in, trapping her, and then began to move upwards. The accident occurred this morning in a Manhattan office building.

Two witnesses in the elevator helplessly watched the woman’s death. They were rescued by firefighters after the elevator became stuck between the first and second floors. Although they were not physically hurt, they were taken to the hospital for psychological trauma.

The New York City Department of Buildings conducted an inspection over the summer shows that a defect was found in one of the elevators. An investigation will search for causes of the malfunction and if it was related to the defect.

Our deepest sympathies are with the friends and family of the victim.
