Bobby Jenks shares surgical error experience

Posted on March 1st, 2012 No Comments

Relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Bobby Jenks, recently chronicled a potentially fatal surgical error that took place while he was undergoing a spinal operation.

Jenks had surgery in Boston to remove two of four bone spurs on his spine early in December. It would be nearly three weeks later when he was home in Phoenix that he noticed a fluid leaking from his incision. He was rushed into emergency surgery where it was discovered that doctors had started to remove the third bone spur but did not completely finish.

The bone spur was left serrated, which allowed spinal fluid to leak. This caused an infection that could have proven fatal if it had spread to his brain.

Car drives into Baba Budan’s Bearcat Cafe

Posted on February 23rd, 2012 No Comments

Early Monday morning a driver that fell asleep at the wheel crashed into Baba Budan’s Bearcat Cafe, causing major damage to the restaurant.

The vehicle drove nearly all the way into the front of the restaurant. No one was inside the cafe at the time of the crash, and the woman behind the wheel was not seriously injured.

The owner of Baba Budan’s began repairing his restaurant immediately and it reopened Wednesday afternoon. However, this is not the first time he has had to deal with a driver hitting his restaurant. He says eight years ago another car struck the building while it was under renovation.

Organic brown rice syrup may contain arsenic

Posted on February 16th, 2012 No Comments

A new study conducted by researchers at Dartmouth College have discovered that food products made with organic brown rice syrup contain high levels of arsenic.

Arsenic is a carcinogen that can cause heart disease and cancer if one is exposed to high levels of it. Researchers found arsenic in some organic baby formulas. Infants are more vulnerable to arsenic’s negative side effects due to their small size. Children exposed to too much arsenic can develop poorer intellectual functions and lower IQs.

Other food products found to contain arsenic included cereal bars and energy shot drinks. The researchers believe that occasionally eating food with organic brown syrup won’t cause any harm, but the frequency should be monitored.

Nine injured in Interstate 75 crash

Posted on February 10th, 2012 No Comments

Nine people were injured Wednesday night in Cincinnati after 11 vehicles and a tractor-trailer collided on Interstate 75.

The extent of the injuries was not released, though no one was seriously hurt. One of the cars included a police cruiser that had pulled over another car. Investigators believe that the driver of the car could be at fault for the pileup since he pulled over on the left instead of on the right shoulder.

Interstate 75 near Galbraith Road and Shepherd Lane was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up about 300 gallons of diesel fuel spilled by the tractor-trailer.

Packaging mix up could lead to unintended pregnancy

Posted on February 2nd, 2012 No Comments

A mix up with birth control pills and placebos could put women at a high risk for pregnancy and has prompted the drug manufacturer Pfizer to issue a recall.

Nearly a million birth control pills of Lo/Ovral-38 and the generics norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol are affected by the packaging error. The mix up could cause the contraceptive to become significantly weakened. Women who believe their birth control package is defective are encouraged to start using non-hormonal birth control immediately.

A 32 year-old woman has already filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after she become pregnant while taking birth control. The mix up is not believed to pose any health risks to the child should the woman become pregnant.

Dozens still missing from cruise wreck

Posted on January 19th, 2012 No Comments

Nearly a week after the Costa Concordia cruise liner crashed near the Tuscan coast, the search continues for at least 24 missing passengers and crew members.

The search had to be postponed on Wednesday due to poor weather conditions. Now the threat of worse weather coming and the possibility of the ship shifting and sinker deeper into the ocean has put added pressure on rescue crews.

After the rescue missions are completed, the government is expected to extract nearly 2,300 tonnes of diesel fuel and lubricant oil to prevent it from leaking into the ocean. The extraction could take nearly two weeks to complete.

A southern California man who sued Starbucks Coffee Co. for injuries he sustained in a slip and fall accident has been awarded $7.5 million by a San Diego Superior Court jury last week.

In 2008, the man was in the coffee shop when he fell on the wet floor. Ongoing complications from his head injury has prevented him from returning to work since the fall. Starbucks Coffee Co. was found negligent in the maintenance of its property.
