Vigil Remembers 30th Anniversary of Who Concert Tragedy

by Administrator 3. December 2009 06:46

A vigil is being organized tonight in Cincinnati to remember the 11 people who were crushed to death 30 years ago at a concert by legendary rock band the Who.  The people were crushed to death as a crowd surged into Riverfront Stadium to get good seats for the event.  The tragic event largely ended the practice of festival seating at large concerts - that is, open, unassigned seating.

The vigil will begin at 6:30 on the West Plaza in U.S. Bank Arena.  Speakers will include witnesses and relatives of the victims of the tragedy.

Restaurant Sanitation

by Administrator 19. July 2009 23:30

Restaurants and other members of the food service industry have the responsibility of instituting good sanitation procedures and protocol that all workers must follow.  Without these regulations in place, bacteria on the employees’ hands and food may be transferred to the customers, putting them at risk of developing a dangerous illness or infection.  When this happens, the restaurant may be held liable for any damages incurred.

Transfer of Bacteria to Customers

Food service providers are expected to comply with certain standards of sanitation in order to protect their customers from the dangers posed by contaminated food.  Failure to do so is considered to be negligence, and they may be held liable for any damages should a customer develop food poisoning.  There are several ways that illness-inducing bacteria may be transferred to a restaurant’s customers:

Failure to adequately clean plates, utensils, cups, and other tools used for serving and eating
Inadequately cleaned food storage containers
Inadequately cleaned seating, eating, and food preparation areas
Failure to thoroughly clean food items
Failure to thoroughly cook food
Lack of protocol regarding worker sanitation and interaction with the food
Lack of pest control

If a restaurant fails to properly train its employees, if it is understaffed, or if it is just negligent in making and enforcing sanitation requirements, then customers may be at risk of developing a food-transferred illness.

Toxic Molds

by Administrator 9. June 2009 01:50

It is important for property owners to periodically check their buildings for the presence of dangerous molds within the walls.  While not all molds and all concentrations of molds are life-threatening, they can be quite irritating to some individuals – especially those with allergies to the substance.  This mold can emerge anywhere moisture may be present – including showers, floors, air ducts, carpets, and bathroom or kitchen walls.

The Dangers of Toxic Molds

If landlords or building owners do not take the proper steps to properly maintain their property, then mold may emerge.  While this substance can be controlled and eliminated, it can be quite a task to do so.  Because of this, it is recommended that periodic checks and proper care methods are taken before mold becomes a real problem.

Health hazards associated with exposure to toxic molds include the following:

The development of asthma or the triggering of asthma attacks
Sinus infections
Symptoms associated with allergic reactions
Nausea or dizziness
Memory loss
Infertility
Brain damage
Cancer

Because the consequences of living in a mold-invested household are so severe, it is wise for building owners to take all the necessary steps to protect their property from this dangerous substance.  If you have been injured from exposure to toxic mold in your workplace or rental residence, then you may have the right to pursue damages from the responsible party.

Lead Poisoning

by Administrator 17. April 2009 00:42

Lead has been used as an additive to paint since historic times. It has been used in a number of items, from chairs to houses to toys to chairs to bowls. It has several useful qualities; it extends the “fresh” look of a coat of paint, helps to decrease the time it takes for a coat of paint to dry, and lends moisture-resistant qualities to paint to prevent corrosion. Unfortunately, we know now that lead is actually poisonous and can cause severe illness and developmental problems in children.

Both adults and children can be affected by lead poisoning, but children tend to be most vulnerable. Chips of lead paint can have a sweet taste, which coupled with children’s natural curiosity, makes lead paint on walls especially risky. Because the majority of houses with lead paint were built prior to the 1980s, these old homes may shed paint chips with surprising regularity.

Furthermore, because children’s bodies are still developing, lead can impede this development and create numerous physical and neurological problems, including kidney damage, slow mental development, sleep disorders, and aggressive behavior. More acute symptoms may include stomachache, cramping, constipation, or vomiting.
