Experts say reporting surgical fires will reduce patient injury

by Administrator 12. May 2010 04:55

According to experts, reporting surgical fires to a separate agency in Ohio would improve patient safety. Other states such as Pennsylvania, California and New York, must report all surgical fires to state health departments.

Surgical fires may sounds very rare, but in fact 650 occur in healthcare facilities a year. Officials at the Ohio Department of Health have said that requiring hospitals in Ohio to report problems during surgery is under discussion. As of now, Ohio does not license their hospitals so there is no order or process to report such errors. Many advocates say that reporting will lead to accountability for hospitals and the public they serve.
