Driver injured by airbag, NHTSA investigates

Posted on May 17th, 2012 No Comments

A man driving a new 2012 Hyundai Elantra was injured after a side-curtain airbag deployed with a metal bracket, slicing his ear in half. The driver has complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which will now launch an investigation.

The NHTSA and Hyundai will investigate to see if this problem will occur in all 2012 Elantras. Hyundai says it has not received any other reports of injuries and does not plan on issuing a recall at this time. So far they have not been able to inspect the vehicle.

The Elantra, Hyundai’s second best-selling car, was recently named North American Car of the Year.

Posted on April 27th, 2012 No Comments

One of the 61 personal injury lawsuits against the NFL will be changed to a wrongful death case following the suicide of Ray Easterling. Easterling played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1972 to 1979. He was among the first to file a concussion lawsuit against the league.

Easterling, 62, was found dead last Thursday in his Richmond, Virginia home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Six months prior to his death, friends and family say his memory was noticeably beginning to deteriorate.

The dozens of lawsuits against the NFL represent more than 1,260 former players who claim they have suffered long-term damage from the concussions they sustained while playing professionally. They accuse the NFL of negligence, carelessness, concealment of information, and intentional misconduct.

Two Argentina parents were more than shocked to discover that their newborn daughter was alive just 12 hours after the hospital staff informed them she was stillborn. The parents made the discovery in the hospital morgue where they went to see her one last time.

The infant, born three months early, is in critical condition at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. Family says she is improving. The hospital told the media this week that five doctors have been suspended while an official investigation is pending.

The parents have said they are planning on filing a medical malpractice lawsuit. They say they have many questions about how the mother was treated prior to delivery and how the hospital handled the newborn.

Mother sues hospital after baby’s finger is cut off

Posted on March 29th, 2012 No Comments

A 15 year-old Florida mother is suing Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center for negligence after her then three-month old daughter had her pinky finger accidentally cut off by a nurse.

The mother took her daughter to the hospital for bronchitis and a high fever last October. The child was in the hospital for three days and had to have an IV. When the nurse went to cut the bandage connected to the IV tube, she accidentally severed the baby’s finger.

She was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, but surgeons were unable to reattach the finger because the nerve endings were too small. The mom is concerned about the potential emotional and physical effects her daughter could suffer.

Puppy bites off infant’s finger

Posted on March 14th, 2012 No Comments

A New Matamora infant had its pinky finger bitten off by his family’s Labrador puppy late last week, but doctors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus believe they can reattach it.

The baby’s 22 year-old mother was sleeping when the incident occurred. She called 911 after she woke up and saw some blood and noticed her son’s finger was missing. Washington County’s dog warden gave the puppy some liquid to make it purge up the finger.

The five week-old child did not cry when the incident occurred, says his mother. The puppy has been surrendered to the Humane Society for adoption.

Repeat drunk driver arrested again

Posted on March 8th, 2012 No Comments

A repeat drunk driver was arrested earlier this week after he failed to appear in a Delaware County court for another drunk driving offense.

The 43 year-old man had previously served eight years in prison after he killed a police officer while driving under the influence. In November 2001, as an officer was writing him a citation, he crashed his vehicle into the squad car and killed the officer.

Along with his prison sentence, his driver’s license was permanently revoked. Last November he was pulled over again and found with a mixed drink in his car. Between 1987 and 2002, the man had five drunk driving convictions.
