Winter Driving Tips
Icy conditions provide serious dangers to anyone leaving their house, whether on foot or in a motor vehicle. While dangerous accidents can occur when pedestrians attempt to walk on ice, the severity of injuries and damage to personal property after an automobile accident on icy roads is often much more significant.
In order to protect yourself and everyone around you from a vehicle skid on icy roads, you should adhere to the following safety tips:
- Practice driving in a safe and secure area. The more familiar you are with driving on ice, the more likely it is that you will be able to recover safely from a dangerous situation. Find a parking lot or other empty area that is free from cars and other obstructions that you could crash into. Then, practice driving on slick and icy conditions at a slow speed so that you can get a feel for how your car handles on such terrain.
- Keep a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles on the road. Your braking time will be significantly slowed when driving on ice, and you want to make sure that you can brake at a safe speed without hitting another vehicle or object.
- Drive slowly. The slower you drive on icy conditions, the less likely it is that you will lose control of your vehicle and go into a skid. Additionally, it will give you plenty of time to react to any surprises on the road.
- Try not to make hasty decisions. Swerving or braking suddenly can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
