Repetitive Strain Injuries

A repetitive strain injury is a very common workplace injury that has been subject to a great deal of scrutiny, attention, and controversy, primarily because one of the hallmarks of a repetitive strain injury is that it lacks a distinct pathophysiological cause. Due to this, many employers are often reluctant to fully cover these claims, many times seeking to reduce their liability or even outright deny such claims altogether.

Although the common perception is that only white collar employees typing on computers all day develop carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries, this is actually untrue. A repetitive strain injury may actually result from any motion that is repeated a number of times with the hands. Such activities may include playing a musical instrument, using hand tools, performing tasks on an assembly line, or even something as mundane as washing a surface.

There are numerous symptoms of a repetitive strain injury. Although, by definition, no structural damage from a repetitive strain injury is present, there are a number of pain related symptoms which may be present in an RSI:

  • Pain which worsens with activity.
  • Pain present in the hand, wrist, or arm.
  • Pain that causes weakness and a lack of endurance.
