Remaining Safe around Aggressive Dogs

As is the case with any animal, dogs are born with natural instincts that can be difficult for humans to understand or control. Oftentimes, these instincts will come out when least expected making it difficult for people to prepare themselves in advance for peculiar or even dangerous dog behaviors.

Aggressive tendencies in dogs are one of the greatest threats these animals pose towards humans. Even well behaved and trained dogs can act aggressively in certain situations. As such, it is important to be aware of the different types of aggressive tendencies that exist so that you can prevent being injured to the best of your ability.

Dominance

Dogs are pack animals and as such, have a natural inclination to assert their dominance over other creatures, even humans. Because of this, one of the most important things you can do while training your dog is to establish early on that you are the dominant creature in that relationship.

Fear

When dogs feel threatened or afraid, they often respond aggressively as a means of protecting themselves. Because of this, it is important to act carefully and move slowly around unfamiliar dogs, as you cannot be sure what actions a given dog might perceive as being dangerous or threatening.

Territorial Aggression

Even though you may assert yourself as the dominant creature in your household, there is likely to be a certain area or item that your dog perceives to be his or hers. For example, if you crate train your dog, your dog will likely consider the crate to be his or her territory.

Dogs are naturally inclined to defend their territory, and so any intrusive moves by you into a dog’s area, such as attempting to pull him or her out of it, could provoke an aggressive response.
