Protecting Yourself from Rabies

Rabies is a virus that can be passed from animals to humans through saliva. Although most people have had rabies vaccines, this does not guarantee prevention. If exposed to rabies, it is imperative that you receive a follow-up round of vaccines to eradicate the disease.

If you or someone you know has contracted rabies because of another party’s negligence, you may be eligible for compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages. Symptoms of Rabies

Typically, rabies only occurs in the wild; however, sometimes domestic animals become infected. Once exposed, symptoms will begin to develop over several days. For animals, the symptoms include:

  • Frothing at the mouth
  • Erratic behavior
  • Poor coordination

When contracted by humans, the disease can result in:

  • Fear of water
  • Muscle spasms
  • Extreme thirst/salivation
  • Confusion
  • Fever/hallucinations

In order to protect you and your loved one from rabies, make sure they can identify the symptoms of rabies in both humans and other animals.

Prevention and Treatment

If you encounter a clearly rabid animal, go inside and immediately call animal control. Do not try to take care of the animal yourself, as rabid animals’ behavior is oftentimes unpredictable and violent.

If you do contract rabies from a dog or other animal, it is important that seek treatment immediately. Rabies can be cured through a series of injections.
