Prisoners’ Rights
Although inmates have been convicted of crimes and are serving time as punishment, they are entitled to human rights. The only two liberties they are currently being denied are 1) their freedom, and 2) their right to vote. Aside from these two rights, they are entitled to all the same rights as other citizens.

Legal Protections
All prisoners are protected from cruel and unusual suffering, which means that torture, physical abuse, and psychological manipulation are strictly prohibited. Additionally every prisoner is afforded the minimum standard of living, which includes: shelter, food, water, and medical services.
It is also unlawful to discriminate against prisoners based on their race, color, age, or religion. However, sentencing and treatment will of course vary depending on the severity of the crime. The Model Sentencing and Corrections Act helps ensure that criminals receive equal treatment based on the crime(s) they committed.
Additionally, all prisoners are granted the right to due process. This means that each prisoner has the opportunity to appeal their sentence, appear before a parole committee, and reduce their sentence through good behavior. Only certain egregious crimes can be penalized by a sentence of life without parole.
