Treating Minor Burns
If you have been exposed to a hot surface for a short period of time, you probably suffered a first degree burn. While extraordinarily painful, these burns should heal within 1-5 days, if treated. For a quicker recovery, try these home remedies:
Immediately submerge the burn in cool water for 10-15 minutes following the accident. If you fail to do this, your skin will continue to burn long after the heat has been removed. Do not use cold water, as this shock can cause death to skin and tissue cells. Apply aloe vera, a renowned treatment for burns, including sun burns. If you do not have aloe vera on hand, consider the following alternatives:
- Calendula oil
- Lavender oil
- Mustard
- Whole milk or cream
When pain is gone, apply a topical antibiotic, such as Neosporin, to reduce chances of an infection. If you believe you are suffering from a more severe burn, or if a substantial part of your body is affected, seek immediate medical care.
