Evaluating Playground Safety: Part I
There are few things more important to a parent than the safety of his or her child. Whether at home, in the car, or at an external location, parents will do anything and everything possible to make sure that their child is safe and secure.
When taking your child to an outdoor playground, you want to make sure that the facilities your child will be using are safe and structurally sound. To avoid unnecessary accident and injuries, here are a few tips you can keep in mind when evaluating a potential playground.
Go In Advance
You want to make sure that you check out every playground before taking your child there so that you can make sure there really are no unexpected hazards. If you take your child with you and evaluate things as you go, there is always the chance that your child will stumble upon a dangerous toy or structure before you have the chance to examine it.
Notice the Surface of the Playground
While you may not be able to prevent every slip and fall that your child will experience, you can make sure they are falling on a structure that is safe and will not cause excess harm. To decrease your child’s chances of being injured, you want to make sure that any playground you visit has a very cushioning and forgiving material as its surface. Some good examples of this include:
- Shredded rubber
- Sand
- Loose dirt / mulch
- Wood chips
Any playground that is surfaced with harsh materials like concrete or packed earth can cause serious damage to your child if he or she happens to fall and should therefore be avoided.
