Drunk Driving Car Accidents
Some people would argue that the state has very little reason to regulate driving as it relates to alcohol
since when a person drinks, he or she is not putting anyone else in danger. This is patently untrue,
as evidenced by the thousands of car accidents that occur on an annual basis involving multiple cars
and one drunk driver.
On an annual basis, there are 17,000 deaths in car accidents involving alcohol. On average, this means
that there is a drunk driving death every 31 minutes for the entire year. Overall, 39% of fatal crashes
had alcohol as a factor and 7% of all accidents in 2004 involved alcohol in some way.
If 17,000 deaths annually isn’t sufficient reason to punish those who drink and drive both criminally
and civilly, there are an additional quarter million people who are merely injured in accidents where
police record alcohol being present. This means that every two minutes, there is a person injured in
a car accident involving alcohol in the United States.
When a person is injured in a car accident involving drunk driving or a driver driving under the influence
of anything, there is a wide range of injuries possible. Depending on the speed at which the cars were
travelling before impact, the part of the car hit, and the safety features in the cars, the injuries
can range from broken and shattered bones and other serious injuries to minor scrapes and bruises.
