Dangers of Porch and Balcony Collapse Accidents

All human-made structures are likely to become less and less structurally sound as time passes. As such, it is important for property owners to routinely have their homes and offices inspected for safety and these inspections should include any add-ons that have been attached to the property such as decks, balconies, or porches.

External structures are oftentimes at a greater risk for deteriorating with the passage of time, as they not only grow weak from repeated use, but they also are exposed to weather which can certainly take its toll on structural stability.

In the case of balconies and porches, property owners need to be extremely careful not only to ensure their own safety and the safety of their family, but to protect any visitors or friends who may come by and use these facilities. If an accident happens and guests sustain injuries, the property owner is liable.

One incident that illustrates this danger very well is the infamous balcony collapse that took place in Chicago in 2003. At a party in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, an older balcony collapsed while approximately 50 party guests were standing on it. This collapse resulted in 13 deaths and 57 injuries, making it the most deadly porch / balcony collapse incident in US history.

After the accident, inspectors noticed that the balcony was poorly constructed, which they say greatly was the ultimate cause of its collapse. However, the fact that the balcony was overcrowded was also a significant factor.
