Common Boating Hazards
Enjoying the outdoors on a boat can be an exciting and relaxing experience whether you are alone, with friends, or with family. As long as you and your companions behave safely, you can almost certainly avoid injury or accident.
However, there are some common irresponsible and reckless actions that boaters engage in that not only jeopardize their own safety, but the safety of everyone else around them. Practicing safety on a boat is as important as it is with any other type of vehicle.
When accidents occur with land-based vehicles, help is readily available and the victims can usually escape the vehicle and go to a safe location. In the water, however, help may be very far away depending on your distance from land, and an accident victim may have no safe place to go if the boat itself is damaged.
By familiarizing yourself with some of the most common boating risks, you can hopefully avoid these dangerous practices and keep yourself and everyone else on the water safe.
Hazardous Behavior
Lack of proper safety equipment: When proper safety equipment is not present on boats, victims are left without the life-saving help they need if an accident takes place.
Boating while intoxicated: Many people fail to realize that driving a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is just as dangerous as driving a car in these impaired conditions. Again, this can be even more dangerous than driving a car while intoxicated because help may not be readily available if an accident does occur while out on the water.
Reckless driving: While some people enjoy the thrill that reckless boating can bring (ie. driving at excessive speeds, swerving to create wake, etc.), it is easy for this behavior to result in a loss of control.
