Burn Injuries: The Bathroom

Millions of serious burn injuries take place in the United States each and every year. In fact, studies have found that there are approximately 2.4 million burn injuries reported every year in the US and 650,000 are severe enough to require professional medical treatment.

While burn accident and injuries can take place nearly anywhere, a large percentage of them take place in people’s home bathrooms. Fortunately, there are minor precautions that individuals can take to dramatically decrease their chances of being injured in a bathroom burn accident.

When using any type of appliance in the bathroom that heats up (hair dryers, curling irons, etc.), make sure that these items are kept as far back on the counter as possible to prevent them falling off and landing on someone’s leg or foot.

  • When you leave the bathroom, make sure that all appliances are turned off and unplugged to prevent overheating and possible fires.
  • When giving a child a bath, make sure to check the water temperature yourself before allowing the child to enter the tub. Additionally, do not place your child in the bath if you are still running water, as the temperature could reach dangerously high temperatures.
  • Make sure that your water heater is set to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent water burns.
  • Do not plug too many appliances into your bathroom outlets.
