Avoiding Accidents as a Pedestrian
Walking, as a mode of transportation, can be a great way to save money, get consistent exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and familiarize oneself with a neighborhood or city. While walking is usually a safe endeavor, everyone should be aware of the risks that pedestrians face—especially in terms of pedestrian – motor vehicle collisions.
Reports have found that in the year 2001, there were a shocking 78,000 pedestrian injuries caused by traffic accidents, as well as 4,882 fatalities.
When a collision occurs between a pedestrian and any type of motor vehicle, the pedestrian will almost always be the one to suffer any injuries or physical consequences. As such, all pedestrians should do everything possible to ensure their safety when taking to the streets.
Pedestrian Safety
The following tips can hopefully prevent your inclusion in a dangerous traffic accident:
- Avoid alcohol consumption if you know you’re going to be walking alone near a heavily trafficked area. Studies have found that approximately 1/3 of all pedestrians killed in collisions with automobiles were intoxicated when they were struck
- Obey all posted safety signs, including crosswalks and traffic signals
- Never assume that you are visible to an automobile. Do not walk in front of or immediately next to a vehicle unless you are absolutely sure that the driver is aware of your presence
- When walking at night, make sure you wear white clothes and/or reflectors to increase your visibility
- Act defensively at all times. Check both ways before crossing the street and when in doubt, wait until all cars have passed before attempting a crossing
