Pedestrian Safety
In many parts of the country, especially in large urban areas, drivers and pedestrians are expected to share the road safely and courteously. Unfortunately, this consideration is rarely put into effect and damaging accidents between motor vehicles and pedestrians continue to happen with shocking regularity.
There are many possible causes of these types of accidents, and by understanding some of the causes, we can hopefully prevent them from occurring in the future. Pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents can be caused by either one of the involved parties, and we will examine accidents caused by both drivers and pedestrians.
Automobile-caused Accidents
When a car or other automobile strikes a pedestrian, it is frequently due to one of the following reasons:
- Failure to adhere to posted safety signs including speed limits, stop / yield signs, or traffic lights
- Speeding through intersections without checking for pedestrians
- Taking corners too quickly
- Lack of attention resulting in slowed or delayed braking speeds
- Vehicle malfunction
In most of these situations, practicing defensive driving and paying greater attention to the road can greatly reduce a vehicle’s chances of causing an accident with a pedestrian.
Pedestrian-caused Accidents
Not all collisions between pedestrians and automobiles are the fault of the driver. Many of these accidents are due to errors and oversights on the part of the pedestrian, such as:
- Failure to adhere to walk / no-walk signs in crosswalks
- Darting into the road after an object or child
- Lack of attention when crossing the street
- Slipping or falling off a sidewalk onto the street
