Burn Injuries: The Outdoors
While there are a great number of fun and exciting activities that both individuals and families can engage in while outside, there are also many risks that could put an unsuspecting person at risk for a serious burn injury.
The following safety tips are intended to help keep you and your family safe from potential burn accidents. By adhering to them, you can hopefully avoid being one of the millions of Americans who suffers a burn accident this year.
Safety Tips
When spending time outside, especially during the summer months, make sure to wear some sort of footwear. Even if it is nothing more than a flimsy flip-flop, footwear will help you protect your feet against burns caused by hot pavement or hot sand.
Make sure that every member of your family is protected by sunscreen whenever they go outside. Again, this is especially important during the summer months.
If you are outside using the grill, make sure to clean up any excess grease that has built up. Additionally, you should try to use as little lighter fluid as possible.
When playing with fireworks outside, be sure to exercise extreme caution—especially if small children are involved or are nearby. Careful adult supervision is one of the most important steps in preventing firework burn injuries.
When enjoying an outdoor fire, make sure that you stay far enough away from the fire at all times to avoid a burn injury.
